Beer Barbecued Tofu

Who needs meat?

I'm sure many of you are saying, "I do!"

But you have to agree, this grilled tofu that has been marinated in beer and barbecue sauce is really a thing of beauty.

(And it tastes good too!)

Beer Barbecued Tofu
(Inspired and adapted from: The Edible Perspective)
((Printable Recipe))

1 package extra firm tofu
1/2 bottle good quality beer
1/3 cup (HFC free) barbecue sauce
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1/2 sweet onion, sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced

1. Cut the tofu into eight slices and place on top of several dish towels.

2. Wrap them up and stack a few books on top.  Let it sit there for about 30 minutes.

3. Find a good drinking beer for the marinade. You'll only need half the bottle. (Enjoy the rest!)

4. Place the beer, ginger, onion, barbecue sauce and garlic in a glass dish.   Add the tofu, turning to cover with the sauce, and marinate for at least 1 1/2 hours in the refrigerator.

5. On a hot, preheated grill- use some tongs to grease your grill grate very well with a paper towel soaked in oil.  Place your tofu on the grill and let it sit there, without moving it, for 7 minutes. Brush the tofu with the marinade while it's grilling.  Flip (re-greasing the grill if necessary) and grill for an additional 7 minutes- brushing with the marinade.

My husband threw the onions that were in the marinade on the grill to go along with the tofu and they were fantastic served on the side.

We served this along with some grilled potatoes and grilled radicchio.
Serves 4 people. (This recipe is easily doubled.)

  1. That does look really good. We made TLTs--tofu, lettuce and tomato sandwhiches. We fry the tofu with some olive oil and soy sauce to get the saltiness of the bacon. YUM!

  2. They look absolutely stunning :)

  3. Looks so good, but I don't do there a good substitute for this?

  4. Charissa, the beer just added a very subtle flavor to the tofu. A dark non-alcoholic beer like an O'Douls Amber would be nice. But if you want to stay away from beer altogether- I'd say a vegetable broth could work to thin out the barbecue sauce. Or, here is another fantastic marinade I've used for tofu before:

  5. Wow, this recipe sounds unbelievably good. I've never tried grilling tofu before, but this looks too good for me not to try it. Not only is it marinated in beer, but you marinated the tofu in beer from one of my favorite breweries.

  6. My boyfriend and I just tried this sauce and it's amazing:) I didn't have fresh ginger so I used about a tsp of ginger powder and it tasted great! I also used Red Stripe for the beer and it gave it a very mild beer taste. The flavors blended really well together-thanks for the inspiration!

  7. Inspired by your recipe, I improvised...

Can you taste the beer in yours? I think the A1 is a bit too powerful even though I used russian imperial stout.

  8. Thanks for sharing your recipe adaptakiw. It looks delicious! The beer was very subtle but my husband and I could definitely taste it. It added a complexity to just having it been barbecue sauce alone.

  9. WOW! This looks amazing! We are big time tofu eaters but have never seen a recipe like this one! I have you saved to my favorites and will be making it as soon as I do my grocery shopping. Thanks so much for making tofu interesting!!

  10. I made this just recently because I have been eating more tofu and less meat. It was really good - the bbq along with the beer made it just wonderful. Honestly, there was nothing I didn't like about it, which is really odd for me since I normally do have a few negatives, but not this one. Great job! Thanks for sharing!

  11. what would types of beer do you think would work best?

    1. I'd say any beer you enjoy drinking would work. I'd recommend a flavorful beer as opposed to a lighter beer. Amber is probably a safe bet.
